The lectures aim at providing a general overview of the global community vision on sustainable development and growth of marine/maritime activities at sea, with a specific focus on ship emissions (e.g. fuel consumption and noise emissions).

Within the context of Blue Economy and Blue Growth the positioning of the waterborne transport is addressed aiming at tackling the ambitious challenge of a smart, greener, and safer maritime transport achievable through the following objectives: (a) greening vessels (efficient vessels, e.g. in terms of fuel consumption mitigation); (b) safer maritime activities at sea (e.g. development of new generation decision support systems to prevent accidents); (c) connected and automated transport at sea (e.g. connected vs autonomous shipping).

Shipping noise and its environmental impact are addressed by: definition of basics of noise; (b) noise in the shipping industry (e.g. during construction and during operations); (c) engineering methodologies for prediction analysis.
