Gianni PAVAN

Gianni Pavan (1960), Master Degree in Nature Sciences at the University of Pavia (1983), Professor of Bioacoustics and of Ecology at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia since 2006. Formerly Professor of Ecology at the IUAV University of Venice (1994-2005). Associate Researcher at INFN-LNS Catania since 2003. Other than teaching, he runs the “Centro Interdisciplinare di Bioacustica e Ricerche Ambientali” (CIBRA) he contributed to create in 1989 to develop advanced bioacoustic research based on digital techniques and runs the Online Database of the Italian Strandings Network.

He started to work on computational bioacoustics in 1980 at the Institute of Entomology of the University of Pavia; he developed and maintains the SeaPro and SeaWave packages for real-time sound analysis and spectral display; he also designed the underwater equipment (various types of towed arrays and analysis instruments) used for marine mammals surveys on either small boats and oceanographic ships. He cooperates with INGV and INFN to develop multidisciplinary underwater acoustic sensing systems since 2003. His main research interests are on marine mammals acoustics, the impact of underwater noise on marine mammals, and marine and terrestrial soundscapes. Cooperates with ACCOBAMS, ONR, NURC, WHOI, IT Navy and other institutions to study and protect marine mammals. He is member of the International BioAcoustic Council (IBAC), member of the Scientific Council of the International Ecoacoustics Society (ISE), and ordinary member of the Italian Association of Acoustics (AIA).
